Sweet, cooling, and nourishing. These Ayurvedic Gulkand Modaks make the perfect prasad for Ganesh Chaturthi.
When festivals come around, especially Ganesh Chaturthi, our kitchens fill with the aroma of steamed rice flour, coconut, jaggery, and cardamom. Among all the sweets offered to Lord Ganesha, modaks hold a special place, believed to be his absolute favorite.
But what if we could make this festive delicacy not just a treat for the taste buds, but also a cooling, wellness-boosting delight? That’s where Gulkand Ukdiche Modak comes in.
Ingredients
▪️1 cup rice flour
▪️1 cup water
▪️1 cup milk
▪️1 cup grated coconut
▪️½ cup jaggery
▪️1 tbsp Amrutam Gulkand
▪️1 tsp ghee
▪️A pinch of salt
▪️Chopped nuts
Method
1. Prepare the Dough
In a pan, bring water and milk to a gentle boil. Add a pinch of salt and ½ tsp ghee. Slowly stir in rice flour, mixing continuously to avoid lumps. Cover and let it rest for 5 minutes.
2. Knead Smoothly
Transfer the warm mixture to a plate. Grease your palms with ghee and knead into a soft dough.
3. Make the Sweet Filling
In another pan, melt jaggery. Add grated coconut. Stir well and cook until slightly thickened. Turn off the flame and mix in Amrutam Gulkand - this keeps its cooling, aromatic properties intact. Let the filling cool. Add chopped nuts of choice.

4. Shape the Modaks
Take a small portion of dough and roll into a ball. Flatten gently into a small cup.
5. Fill with Goodness
Place a spoonful of the coconut–jaggery–gulkand mixture in the center. Carefully bring the edges together and shape into a modak.
6. Steam to Perfection
Place the modaks in a steamer greased with ghee or lined with banana leaf. Steam for 10–12 minutes until soft and glossy.
Cooking during festivals is not just about food. It’s about devotion, togetherness, and care. As you prepare these Gulkand Modaks, take a moment to infuse your cooking with love and gratitude. Offer them to Lord Ganesha, and then share them with your family and friends as a reminder that wellness can be delicious too.
