Shilajit is one of the most celebrated ingredients in wellness. Known as the "conqueror of mountains," it has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries.
Shila means mountain or stone, and Jeet means victory.
Shilajit is famous for its ability to boost energy, vitality, and overall health. As more people look for natural health solutions, Shilajit is getting more attention worldwide. Its unique blend of minerals, antioxidants, and fulvic acid provides many health benefits, supporting everything from brain function to immune health.
However, with the growing demand, there are now many Shilajit products on the market. It can be hard to find authentic, high-quality Shilajit among the cheap imitations. It’s important to know that not all Shilajit is the same—many products lack proper purification, bioavailability, or the right combination with other herbs to bring out its full power.
What is Shilajit?
Shilajit is a dark, sticky substance found in the Himalayas. It seeps through rocks when warmed by the sun. Formed over centuries from the fermentation of medicinal plants, it is known in Ayurveda as the "destroyer of weakness" Shilajit is a Rasayana, a powerful rejuvenator that helps restore, rebuild, and renew.
According to the great Ayurvedic scholar Maharishi Agnivesha,
“There is no curable disease on earth that cannot be treated with the proper use of pure Shilajit, when taken with the right dosage, anupana (vehicle), diet, and lifestyle.”
He further noted that even a healthy individual who consumes Shilajit in the right manner experiences a remarkable enhancement in energy, strength, and vitality.
Maharishi Sushruta and Maharishi Charaka both admired Shilajit for its incredible health benefits. Sushruta praised it for its ability to restore and rejuvenate the body, while Charaka believed it helped slow aging, fight diseases, improve intelligence, and strengthen the body.

The Different Types of Shilajit
In Ayurveda, Shilajit is classified based on its origin and the type of minerals it contains. These include:
-
▪️Suryatapi Shilajit – Formed under the heat of the sun, it is rarer and considered more potent.
-
▪️Agnitapi Shilajit – Obtained by heating rocks through fire, this form is more commonly available.
The Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita (ancient Ayurvedic texts) mention various types of Shilajit depending on its mineral content, including:
-
▪️Swarnagarbha (Gold-bearing) Shilajit
-
▪️Rajatgarbha (Silver-bearing) Shilajit
-
▪️Loha (Iron-bearing) Shilajit, often considered the best Shilajit
-
▪️Tamragarbha (Copper-bearing) Shilajit
The highest quality of Shilajit, according to Sushruta Samhita, is Loha-garbha (iron-bearing) due to its superior therapeutic properties.
Why is Shilajit Used?
Shilajit has many therapeutic uses in Ayurveda. Some of its main benefits include:
-
▪️Improved Vitality and Stamina: It boosts energy and reduces fatigue.
-
▪️Memory and Cognitive Function: It enhances brain function and memory.
-
▪️Anti-Aging Benefits: Its antioxidants help fight free radicals, delaying aging.

Which Shilajit is best?
Not all Shilajit is the same. The quality of Shilajit varies depending on its source, purification process, and how it’s consumed. When choosing Shilajit, quality matters.
At Amrutam, we use Loha Shilajit (Iron-bearing Shilajit), known for its superior therapeutic properties, as outlined in the Sushruta Samhita. This form of Shilajit is highly regarded for its rejuvenating effects, particularly for strengthening the body, boosting vitality, and supporting overall wellness. It is considered the best among the different types of Shilajit.
How We Test Its Authenticity
We understand that with the rise in popularity of Shilajit, it’s crucial to ensure that you are getting a pure and authentic product. Here are a couple of tests we use to ensure our Shilajit’s authenticity:
-
▪️Fire Test:
Pure Shilajit, when placed on a smokeless fire, will swell and increase in size without producing smoke or turning to ash.
-
▪️Water Test:
Pure Shilajit, when placed in water, will dissolve slowly and settle at the bottom like a thin thread or filament.
-
▪️Alcohol Test:
Pure Shilajit will not dissolve in alcohol.
How is Shilajit Purified?
These tests are vital to ensure that the Shilajit we use retains its natural potency and is free from impurities.

The purification or Shodhana process is fundamental to transforming raw Shilajit into a safe, potent, and bioavailable Ayurvedic remedy. According to ancient Ayurvedic texts, the raw resin that exudes from the mountains is not immediately suitable for therapeutic use. It must first be carefully cleansed of impurities, heavy metals, and any extraneous materials. Here is how the traditional Shodhana process is carried out in Amrutam Shilajit Gold Malt:
First, raw Shilajit is soaked in a herbal decoction made from Triphala. This step helps remove dirt and harmful substances. The Shilajit is kept in this water overnight so the cleansing can happen properly.
The soaked Shilajit is then boiled in water. As it heats, a foam forms on the surface. This foam contains impurities and is carefully removed. This boiling and foam-removal process is repeated several times until no more foam appears. It ensures that the Shilajit is completely clean and safe.
Once purified, the Shilajit is spread out under the sun to dry. Sunlight helps remove leftover moisture and further purifies the Shilajit while preserving its natural strength and medicinal qualities.
The dried Shilajit is then gently cooked with desi ghee in an iron pot. This softens its texture, makes it easier to digest, and improves how well the body can absorb its nutrients. Cooking it in an iron vessel also enriches it with trace minerals.

Why is the Shilajit in a Malt?
In today’s wellness market, Shilajit is available in many forms - from sticky resins and fine powders to convenient capsules, but not all forms are created equal, especially when viewed through the lens of Ayurveda
Ayurveda is more than just herbs, it’s a science that deeply considers how a remedy is consumed, and what it is consumed with. Two important Ayurvedic concepts that guide this are Anupana and Yogavahi. Both play a major role in how a herb like Shilajit works in the body.

What is Anupana?
Anupana refers to the substance that is taken along with or immediately after a medicine. Think of it as the vehicle that carries the herb or formulation deep into the body. The right Anupana doesn’t just help the herb absorb better, it also tailors its effect according to your body’s needs.
Some common Anupanas include:
-
▪️Warm milk – nourishes and strengthens (often used with Shilajit for vitality).
-
▪️Ghee (clarified butter) – enhances absorption and soothes inflammation.
-
▪️Honey – improves digestion and channels the herb towards the respiratory system.
-
▪️Warm water – simple and cleansing, used when detoxification is the goal.
So, when Ayurvedic texts say Shilajit should be taken with warm milk, that’s because milk serves as its Anupana, supporting its rejuvenating and strengthening effects.
What is Yogavahi?
Now here’s where Shilajit becomes extra special.
Yogavahi is a term for substances that have the unique ability to enhance the effects of other herbs or medicines they are taken with - without changing their own properties. These substances act like intelligent carriers, directing the action of other herbs to the right tissues or systems in the body.
Shilajit is considered a powerful Yogavahi in Ayurveda. When it is combined with other medicinal herbs, it:
-
▪️Increases their bioavailability (how well the body absorbs and uses them).
-
▪️Strengthens their potency and effectiveness.
-
▪️Guides their action to the correct parts of the body.
This is why Shilajit is often included in herbal formulations or malt-based blends, like Amrutam’s Shilajit Gold Malt. It helps all the other herbs in the formulation work better and deeper.
In fact, in Amrutam’s Shilajit Gold Malt, Shilajit works as a Yogavahi to harmonize and enhance the benefits of powerful herbs like:
-
▪️Swarna Bhasma – For overall rejuvenation, vitality, and longevity
-
▪️Ashwagandha – for stress relief and vitality
-
▪️Kaunch Beej – for reproductive health and strength
-
▪️Brahmi – for mental clarity and focus
-
▪️Safed Musli – for stamina and immunity
-
▪️Kesar – for radiance and mood elevation
Together, these herbs form a potent Rasayana (rejuvenative blend), and Shilajit helps each of them work better, delivering a synergistic effect that targets the mind, body, and energy systems.
In short:
Together, these principles explain why, how, and with what you should take Ayurvedic medicines, and why Shilajit, when purified and paired correctly, becomes one of the most powerful rejuvenators in Ayurveda.

Can Women Take Shilajit ?
Shilajit isn’t just for men—it has great benefits for women too! Many advertisements focus on how it boosts stamina and testosterone in men, which can make it seem like it's only for them. But in reality, Shilajit helps both men and women with energy, aging, and overall health.
For women, especially those dealing with fatigue, perimenopause, or menopause, Shilajit can be very helpful. During menopause, the body goes through changes that can cause tiredness, mood swings, and lower energy. Shilajit helps by increasing stamina, calming the mind, and improving emotional well-being.
It also supports brain health, improving memory, focus, and mental clarity to help with brain fog. Its immune-boosting effects help the body fight illnesses and stay strong. If you have joint or muscle pain, Shilajit can help reduce swelling and discomfort, making it easier to move. It also improves skin and hair health, giving you a healthy glow and stronger hair because of its rich minerals and antioxidants. Plus, it helps with stress and anxiety, making you feel calmer and more balanced.
Why women need a smaller dosage:
While both men and women can benefit from Shilajit, women often require a smaller dosage due to differences in their physiological needs. Women’s bodies generally have different hormonal levels and energy requirements compared to men, making a smaller daily intake more suitable. A smaller dosage ensures the gentle balancing of hormones and supports overall well-being without overwhelming the body.
How to use Shilajit?
For Men:
Take 1 spoon of Shilajit Gold Malt with warm water or milk, once in the morning and/or 1 hour before dinner.
For Women:
Take ½ spoon of Shilajit Gold Malt with warm water or milk, once a day.
Classified as a Rasayana in Ayurveda, Shilajit is known for its rejuvenating qualities and its ability to promote longevity. Ancient texts like the Charaka Samhita describe it as a universal tonic that enhances strength (Balya), nourishment (Pushtikar), and ojas (vital energy), benefits that are not gender-specific. Shilajit balances all three Doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) and nourishes Dhatus (body tissues), including Shukra (reproductive tissue), making it supportive of hormonal health in both men and women.
Before starting any new supplement regimen, including Shilajit, it is important to consult with a healthcare provider or Ayurvedic practitioner, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have any pre-existing health conditions.
In an age of quick fixes and synthetic solutions, Shilajit stands as a testament to nature’s power and patience. It’s not a magic bullet - it’s a steady, potent force that, when taken with care, knowledge, and consistency, can truly transform the way we feel from within. Whether you're looking to restore energy, support hormonal health, improve memory, or simply age more gracefully, Shilajit is a timeless ally in your Ayurvedic wellness journey.
At Amrutam, we honor this ancient wisdom with every jar of Shilajit Gold Malt - carefully crafted, traditionally purified, and synergistically blended to serve your health, naturally.
