Why do some people naturally prefer routine while others thrive on change? Why does one person often feel warm while another tends to feel cold?

Ayurveda explores these differences through Prakriti, or your natural constitution.

According to Ayurvedic philosophy, every person has three Doshas, Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, in different proportions. Your unique combination forms your Prakriti and may help describe tendencies related to energy, digestion, sleep, skin, hair, and temperament.

This Dosha Calculator offers a simple way to explore which Dosha may be more prominent in your constitution.

If you are new to the concept, Amrutam's guide to the three Ayurvedic Doshas is a useful starting point.

What Is Prakriti in Ayurveda?

Ayurveda traditionally describes nature through five elements:

  • Space
  • Air
  • Fire
  • Water
  • Earth

These combine to form the three Doshas:

Vata: Space + Air
Pitta: Fire + Water
Kapha: Earth + Water

Everyone has all three Doshas. The difference lies in their relative proportions and how their qualities are expressed.

Your Dosha result should therefore be treated as a guide to your tendencies, not a rigid personality or body-type label.

What Does a Vata Result Mean?

Vata is associated with space and air. Its traditional qualities include lightness, dryness, coolness, movement, and changeability.

People with stronger Vata tendencies may recognise characteristics such as:

  • Quick or variable energy
  • A preference for variety
  • Lighter or interrupted sleep
  • Variable appetite
  • A tendency toward dryness
  • Creativity and spontaneity

Not every characteristic has to apply to you.

What Does a Pitta Result Mean?

Pitta is traditionally associated with fire and water. It is commonly described as warm, sharp, focused, and intense.

Pitta tendencies may include:

  • Feeling warmer than others
  • A noticeable or regular appetite
  • Greater sensitivity to heat
  • A focused and organised nature
  • Determination and goal-oriented thinking

Amrutam's guide to understanding Pitta Dosha explores these traditional characteristics in more detail.

What Does a Kapha Result Mean?

Kapha combines earth and water. Ayurveda associates it with stability, heaviness, smoothness, coolness, and steadiness.

Kapha tendencies may include:

  • Steady energy
  • A naturally sturdy build
  • A preference for familiar routines
  • Calmness and patience
  • Traditionally, smoother skin or thicker hair

You can learn more in Amrutam's guide to understanding Kapha Dosha.

What If I Get Two Doshas?

Many people do not fall neatly into a single Dosha type.

You may receive a result such as:

  • Vata-Pitta: Creativity and movement combined with focus and intensity.
  • Pitta-Kapha: Drive and determination combined with stability and patience.
  • Vata-Kapha: Changeability and imagination combined with calmness and steadiness.

Some people may also score relatively evenly across all three Doshas.

An online quiz simplifies a much more individual Ayurvedic framework, so mixed results are completely possible.

Prakriti vs Vikriti: What’s the Difference?

Your Prakriti refers to your underlying constitution.

Vikriti refers to your present state or a temporary shift from your natural baseline.

For example, stress, travel, poor sleep, weather, or changes in eating habits may temporarily influence how you feel without changing your underlying Prakriti.

This is why you should answer the calculator based on your long-term tendencies.

Can Doshas Relate to Sleep, Skin and Hair?

Ayurveda traditionally applies Dosha qualities to different aspects of wellbeing.

Vata may be associated with dryness and lighter sleep. Pitta may be linked with heat or sensitivity. Kapha may be associated with greater heaviness, smoothness, or steadiness.

These are Ayurvedic concepts, not medical diagnoses.

Should You Change Your Diet Based on Your Dosha?

Your Dosha can introduce you to Ayurveda's individualised approach to food and routine, but a quiz result should not become a restrictive diet plan.

Food choices also depend on your age, nutritional needs, activity level, allergies, health conditions, medications, season, and lifestyle.

Similarly, you should not choose herbs or supplements based only on an online Dosha result.

Your Dosha Is a Starting Point

Discovering your Dosha is less about placing yourself into a category and more about becoming aware of your natural tendencies.

Notice what supports your energy, digestion, sleep, skin, and everyday routine. Ayurveda looks at the individual rather than assuming the same habits work equally well for everyone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the three Doshas?

The three Doshas are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Ayurveda uses them to describe different qualities and tendencies within the body and mind.

Can I have more than one Dosha?

Yes. Everyone has all three Doshas, and many people may show two relatively dominant Doshas.

Can my Dosha change?

Your underlying Prakriti is traditionally considered relatively stable, although your present state may change with age, season, diet, stress, sleep, and lifestyle.

Is a Dosha Calculator diagnostic?

No. It is an educational tool based on traditional Ayurvedic concepts and should not be used to diagnose a medical condition.

Should I take herbs based on my Dosha result?

Not based on the calculator alone. Individual health needs, medications, pregnancy, allergies, and other factors may need to be considered before using herbs or supplements.
