Menopause doesn't happen overnight. For most women, the body goes through a transition called perimenopause before menopause. During this time, hormone levels begin to fluctuate, and you may start noticing changes that weren't there before. Sometimes they're subtle. Sometimes they're hard to ignore.
Here are some of the most common ones:

This is often one of the earliest signs. Your periods may become irregular, come earlier or later than usual, or change in flow.

You may suddenly feel unusually warm, start sweating, or wake up feeling overheated.

You may have trouble falling asleep, wake up during the night, or feel tired even after getting enough hours of sleep.

Irritability, mood swings, feeling anxious or unusually emotional can sometimes appear during perimenopause.

You might find yourself forgetting small things, struggling to concentrate, or feeling mentally less sharp than usual.
Some women notice changes in weight, skin, hair, energy levels or their overall sense of wellbeing.
Here's an important distinction:

Perimenopause is the transition leading up to menopause, when hormonal fluctuations and symptoms can begin.
Menopause is reached after you've gone 12 consecutive months without a period, when there isn't another obvious cause for the absence of periods.
Every woman experiences this transition differently. You may have several symptoms, just one or none at all.
Ayurveda views this stage as a natural transition in a woman's life, rather than something that needs to be feared.
As the body moves through different life stages, Ayurveda focuses on supporting nourishment, digestion, sleep, daily routine and overall balance.
The goal isn't to fight the transition. It's to support your body as it changes.
If your symptoms are new, severe, affecting your everyday life, or your periods change significantly, it's worth speaking with a healthcare professional. Changes in periods and other symptoms can have causes other than perimenopause too.
Your body may start giving you little signals before menopause arrives. Understanding them can make the transition feel a lot less confusing.
Listen to the changes. Track them. And give your body the support it needs.
