Have you noticed that your appetite, digestion or energy can feel a little different when the weather changes? One day you're hungry as usual. The next, you feel bloated after a meal, don't feel like eating much, or suddenly crave something warm and comforting.
Our bodies respond to changes in temperature, humidity, activity, sleep and daily routine. And Ayurveda has been paying attention to this relationship between the seasons and our bodies for centuries.

This is why Ayurveda doesn't recommend eating exactly the same way throughout the year. Instead, it encourages us to adjust our food and habits with the season.
This approach is known as Ritucharya - the Ayurvedic practice of adapting your routine according to seasonal changes.
So, what should you eat when the weather changes? Let's make it simple.

Your body is constantly adapting to its surroundings. When the weather becomes hotter, you may naturally sweat more and need more fluids. During colder months, you may feel hungrier and prefer warm, hearty meals. Even during the transition between seasons, your digestion can feel different.
From a modern perspective, changes in temperature, hydration, physical activity and routine can influence appetite, digestion, energy levels and sleep.
Ayurveda looks at the same idea through Agni, or digestive fire. The strength of Agni is not considered completely fixed. It can be influenced by the season, your routine, food choices and overall state of the body.
That's why seasonal eating isn't about following a complicated diet. It's about giving your body what suits it at that time of year.
You don't need to completely change your kitchen every time the season changes. Start with a few simple habits.

One of the simplest principles of Ayurvedic eating is to work with the season rather than against it. Choose fresh vegetables, fruits, grains and other foods that are naturally available during that time of year. Seasonal foods also make it easier to keep your meals varied and nourishing.
During seasonal transitions, some people notice more bloating, heaviness or digestive discomfort. This is a good time to avoid making every meal extremely heavy or overly complicated.
Simple meals such as:
▪️Khichdi
▪️Dal and rice
▪️Light vegetable preparations
▪️Soups
▪️Freshly cooked sabzi
▪️Warm grains and nourishing dals
can be comforting and easy to include in your routine.
Ayurveda traditionally gives importance to freshly prepared, warm food, especially when digestion feels sensitive.

Seasonal eating shouldn't mean eating only fruits, vegetables or light foods. Your body still needs protein for everyday maintenance and nourishment.
Include foods such as:
▪️Dal and lentils
▪️Beans and legumes
▪️Paneer or curd
▪️Eggs, if you eat them
▪️Nuts and seeds
The right combination will depend on your dietary preferences and what your body tolerates well.

Healthy fats are another part of a balanced diet. Traditional Indian cooking has long included sources such as ghee, nuts, seeds and other naturally occurring fats.
You don't need large quantities. A little can go a long way in making meals more satisfying and nourishing.

We tend to associate hydration with summer. But your body needs fluids throughout the year. During weather changes, your thirst and fluid needs may not always feel obvious, particularly when you're busy or your routine changes. Keep water nearby and drink regularly.
Depending on the season, you can also include:
▪️Soups
▪️Buttermilk
▪️Coconut water
▪️Herbal drinks
▪️Water-rich fruits and vegetables
Choose what suits your body, the weather and your usual diet.
This is where seasonal eating becomes particularly interesting. Agni is the Ayurvedic concept of digestion and metabolism. Ayurveda considers healthy digestion an important foundation for overall wellbeing.
When digestion feels comfortable, you may notice that you feel lighter, more energetic and more comfortable after meals. But when your routine becomes irregular or your meals don't suit you, you may notice things like: Bloating. Heaviness. Gas. Irregular appetite. Discomfort after eating.
Rather than immediately reaching for a solution, Ayurveda encourages you to first look at your everyday habits. Are you eating at regular times? Are your meals too heavy? Are you eating while distracted? Are you drinking enough water? Are you eating according to the season? Sometimes, the smallest changes can make your routine feel much better.
There isn't one universal list of foods everyone needs to avoid. Instead, pay attention to foods that consistently make you feel uncomfortable.
You may want to go easy on:
▪️Very heavy meals
▪️Excessively fried foods
▪️Highly processed foods
▪️Very sugary foods
▪️Eating large meals late at night
▪️Long gaps followed by overeating
This isn't about restriction. It's about noticing what your body is telling you.
