The History
Hemp (Bhang) is among the oldest yet widely known medicinal plant regarded with a special stature in the Ayurvedic learnings. For thousands of years, Hemp has been part of the growth of human civilisations across the world. The plant has been cultivated for ages in order to benefit from its oil, fiber, seeds and medicinal properties.
Hemp is a variety of cannabis Sativa plant, it is much different from marijuana, which also belongs to cannabis Sativa family but contains high amount of THC, resulting in psychoactive effects, whereas Hemp has a low level of THC. The origins of Hemp remains disputed, with little known records claiming the earliest traces to be coming from what today is Central China around 8000 BC, where the plant served multiple uses like making ropes, clothes, paper and even used as food.
As the world trades started to occur, Hemp travelled to other parts of the globe like ancient Greece and Rome, Around 1500’s it reached American lands through European settlers. The connection of Hemp and the Indian subcontinent is age-old, Historians believe that the plant was first found in these native lands around 2800 BC and since was used for medicinal and religious purposes. The mentions of Hemp and similar plants can be seen in the Sacred Hindu text Arthveda, which is one of the four Vedas, that holds immense amount of information on Ayurveda and ancient medicinal science. Rigveda also has mention of Hemp to be used for religious purposes.
Hemp is regarded as one of the four sacred plants possessing the power to heal human distress. Vedas have defined Hemp and its uses in different forms, one of which is in the form of a drink termed as “Soma”, said to be consumed by warriors. The Hemp plant is also associated with Lord Shiva, who is said to be fond of consuming it in the form of drink or paste.
Hemp cultivation despite its deep inclined roots in the Indian culture faced a lot of legal restriction and social stigma over the course of 20th century. In the year 1985, the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance (NDPS) Act categorised Hemp along with Marijuana and other substances under prohibition resulting in a stoppage of cultivation, use, sale or transportation of the plant or related material except for medicinal and scientific purposes.
Hemp for Hair Nourishment
In the recent years, Hemp seed oil has shined out as a new alternative for hair nourishment, at its heart, Hemp seed oil is a powerhouse of fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants along with core components like omega-3 and omega-6., which helps in maintaining a healthy scalp. Hemp oil's natural properties go beyond its nutritional value, providing a multitude of benefits for hair. Organic hemp seed oil for hair is a useful treatment for a variety of scalp issues due to its natural anti-inflammatory and antibacterial qualities. By soothing and reducing itching, redness, and flakiness brought on by infections or irritation, its mild yet strong nature promotes the best possible conditions for hair development.
An annoying issue is brittle hair that is prone to breaking. Using hemp oil on a regular basis can alter that perception. The strengthening qualities of the oil increase hair elasticity, which lowers the likelihood of breakage and increases your hair's general resilience. By acting as a natural barrier, hemp oil protects the hair strands from these dangerous chemicals. This shield keeps hair follicles safe from harm and guarantees continuous development. Hemp oil efficiently retains moisture by creating a protective coating on the hair, which is especially advantageous for people with porous hair that loses moisture quickly.
