“Open your mouth and stick out your tongue.”

Almost everyone has heard this during a doctor’s visit. But have you ever wondered why? It might seem like a simple routine check, but your tongue actually provides valuable clues about what’s happening inside your body. Doctors observe the tongue for signs of infection, dehydration, nutritional deficiencies, or inflammation

In Ayurveda, examining the tongue is called Jivha Pariksha. An important part of traditional diagnosis. Ayurvedic practitioners study the colour, coating, moisture, texture, and shape of the tongue to understand the state of digestion, toxins, and dosha balance.

The tongue acts like a mirror of your digestive system and overall health. Small changes on the tongue - such as a white coating, yellow layer, redness, or cracks. It may reveal imbalances in digestion, excess internal heat, toxin buildup, or dehydration.

Let’s explore what your tongue might be trying to tell you.

1. White Coating on the Tongue

A thick white coating on the tongue is one of the most common signs observed in Ayurveda. This usually indicates the presence of Ama (toxins) caused by slow or weak digestion.

When food is not digested properly, metabolic waste accumulates overnight and appears as a white coating on the tongue in the morning.

Possible Ayurvedic causes

▪️Weak digestive fire (Mandagni)

▪️Heavy or difficult-to-digest foods

▪️Late-night eating

▪️Poor gut metabolism

What Ayurveda suggests

▪️Start the day with warm water

▪️Practice tongue scraping (Jivha Nirlekhana) with copper tongue cleaner

▪️Eat lighter, warm meals that support digestion

2. Yellow Coating on the Tongue

A yellowish layer on the tongue often points to excess heat in the body, which Ayurveda associates with aggravated Pitta dosha

This condition may occur when the digestive system becomes irritated due to excessive spicy, oily, or fried foods.

Possible Ayurvedic causes

▪️Excess Pitta

▪️Overconsumption of spicy food

▪️Digestive irritation

▪️Acidic imbalance in the stomach

What Ayurveda suggests

▪️Include cooling foods like cucumber, coconut, and coriander

▪️Reduce spicy, oily, and fried foods

▪️Drink adequate water

3. Very Red or Inflamed Tongue

If the tongue appears unusually red or inflamed, Ayurveda interprets this as excess internal heat or inflammation in the digestive system.

This may also occur during periods of digestive stress or irritation.

Possible Ayurvedic causes

▪️Strong Pitta imbalance

▪️Gastric irritation

▪️Excess heat-producing foods

What Ayurveda suggests

▪️Eat cooling foods – cucumber, coconut water, fennel, mint, pomegranate.

▪️Reduce heat-aggravating foods – very spicy, fried, oily foods and alcohol.

▪️Use gentle spices – fennel, cumin, coriander instead of strong spices.

▪️Stay hydrated – water or cooling herbal drinks like fennel water.

▪️Eat at regular times – avoid skipping meals or overeating.

4. Cracks or Dryness on the Tongue

Cracks, dryness, or deep grooves on the tongue can sometimes indicate dehydration or nutritional imbalance.

In Ayurveda, this also relates to Vata imbalance, which is associated with dryness and irregular digestion.

Possible Ayurvedic causes

▪️Dehydration

▪️Vata imbalance

▪️Nutritional deficiencies

▪️Irregular eating habits

What Ayurveda suggests

▪️Stay well hydrated – sip warm water or herbal teas through the day.

▪️Include nourishing fats – add ghee, soaked almonds, or sesame oil to meals.

▪️Eat warm, cooked foods – soups, khichdi, and stews help balance Vata.

▪️Avoid very dry foods – limit packaged snacks, excess caffeine, and raw foods.

▪️Maintain regular meal timings to support digestion.

The Ayurvedic Practice of Tongue Scraping

One of the simplest daily rituals Ayurveda recommends is tongue scraping. Using a copper or stainless steel tongue scraper each morning helps remove the overnight buildup of toxins and bacteria from the tongue.

Benefits of tongue scraping

▪️Supports oral hygiene

▪️Removes toxin buildup

▪️Improves taste of food

▪️Supports digestive health

It is considered an important part of Dinacharya.

The tongue can reveal subtle changes in the body long before symptoms become serious. By observing your tongue regularly, you may notice early signals about digestion, hydration, and internal balance.

Ayurveda encourages us to listen to these signals and adjust our lifestyle and diet accordingly. Because sometimes, the body speaks quietly  and the tongue is one of the first places it shows.
